When you encounter the same little detail in fanfic after fanfic and you realize you genuinely can’t remember if that thing is actually canon or if it’s just something fandom made up.
I like to refer to this phenomenon as One True Fanon.

This is essentially why transformers is soft science-fantasy at best. It attempts to make no genuine social commentary beyond “bad people are bad and do bad things” (even IDW fell flat on its face with this) and “good people are good and do good things”. Add that these “incredibly alien, genderless robots with a completely different culture” are almost all voiced and written by cishet white dudes, and if there are a couple that are poc and/or women, they’re… pretty poorly executed (and in some cases literally executed, hello Bay) and the massively under-explored potential in this franchise is almost painful.
Science fiction explores philosophy and the human condition through the lens of alien cultures, allegory, and worldbuilding. “We have aliens” does not real science fiction make.
And THIS is why I consider Transformers a fantasy franchise and not a sci-fi one.

I'm not "offended" by the shit people say--I am harmed by it. When you complain about having to be "PC," you are saying that you are perfectly fine with hurting people and supporting cultural systems that cause tangible harm to certain populations.
You mentioned abuse justifying in the fandom tonight? Howso? Have I just been missing certain posts?
Anyone who says Starscream deserved what he got at the end is justifying abuse.
Anyone who laughs at how dumb Starscream is regarding the decisions he made during this episode— and therefore failing to take into account that Starscream is panicky and anxious because Megatron will beat him if he screws up and that can make anyone make mistakes— is justifying abuse.
Anyone who fails to acknowledge that there’s something wrong with the disparity of Megatron’s response to KO’s role in the ep’s events as compared to his response to Starscream’s is— well, not justifying abuse, but perhaps deliberately misreading canon so they can more easily justify abuse? Certainly anyone who tries to claim that beating Starscream is acceptable or Decepticon-culture-sancitifed corporal punishment for what he did is justifying abuse.
Anyone who implies that Starscream stays with Megatron because he’s a masochist is justifying abuse.
I haven’t even been looking for this. I haven’t made a habit of checking the tags in months and I honestly don’t have that many TF or TFP-current blogs followed anymore. And I still saw all of this. Tonight. On my dash and on my plurk timeline.
It’s enough to make me soulsick.
I hope you liked the new TFP epsiode! I really enjoyed it! So relieved no one died. (Even if Starscream got beaten--I was just so glad he didn't die, I was seriously afraid Megatron would just shoot him dead right there.)
I enjoyed it right up until the scene with SS at the very end, yeah. It was definitely on the high end for TFP eps— which isn’t to say that it didn’t have flaws and things that I didn’t like, of course (other than the SS thing at the end, which goes beyond “I personally didn’t like it” and into “this is egregiously sick” of course), but overall I thought this one was a lot stronger than most of the rest of them this season have been.
Character writing and interactions (at least for certain characters) always has been one of the writing team’s strong suits, and they were in fine form today with KO and SS, and to a lesser extent with Silas/Cylas, even. It’s nice to see them continuing to give KO and Starscream both really nuanced and subtle characterization, and as usual the voice actors and animators really delivered as well.
(Except for KO’s stupid run, what the hell is that about. I’m trying to remember if we’ve seen him run before, and if so did he look that goofy and awkward?)
But of course, like most things re: TF fandom lately, the fandom’s abuse-justifying, blinkered, smallest-meanest-shittiest-interpretation-of-canon reaction is really kind of ruining my night. I swear to god I’m in this fandom despite 99% of its fanbase, not because of it.
