SIGN THIS PETITION TO KEEP ROLEPLAY ALIVE.

th3courtjester:

flamehans:

TheSOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act) bill has resurfaced and is once again trying to be passed.

The link attached will take you to a petition. Unless this petition reaches 100,000signatures by next week, this will happen:

  • All websites containing media that refers to or is owned by a company that hasn’t given its permission for the media to be displayed can and will be shut down. This means sites such as Tumblr, Wattpad, Pinterist, fanfiction.com.
  • People who post such media can and will be fined, with a maximum sentence of five years in prison. This includes, but is not limited to, people who own/post the following: fanfiction, fan art, roleplay blogs, fan blogs/accounts and movie streaming sites.

"The legislation would allow copyright holders and the Justice Department to seek court orders against websites associated with copyright infringement. SOPA, the House version, applies to both domestic and foreign websites, while PIPA targets foreign websites. If that court order is granted, the entire website would be taken down. Internet users who typed in the site’s URL address would receive an error message, and for all appearances, the site would never have existed. Importantly, the court does not need to hear a defense from the actual website before issuing its ruling. The entire website can be condemned without a trial or even a traditional court hearing."

This is not a joke.
This is real.

We need 100,000 signatures by next week. Make one of them yours, or all these things that make you happy will disappear.

{[ GUYS. THERE’S ONLY 4,000 SIGNATURES. 4,000 OUT OF 100,000 PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH EVERYONE]}

Anonymous asked: FYI on the Facebook pronouns. I selected "them" and I now show up on my family's pages as their son/brother. I had my gender censored from them in a custom privacy setting but FB kinda inadvertently outed me. Just in case anyone is in the same boat, passing that along.

annabunches:

thenonbinarysafespace:

Oh wow. That’s kinda shitty—

PSA though.

Ahh, so not only are neutral pronouns getting masculine defaults for relation terms (really, it should be sibling, child, spouse, etc), relation terms aren’t ACLed.

This raises the question: how would you ACL those relationship terms? I mean, you have to put something there; otherwise that would flag as suspicious. I suppose showing gender-neutral terms as described above for anyone who doesn’t have the ACL is the obvious solution, but even that could be strange. I can just see: “My profile says you’re my ‘child’, now. What’s up with that?”

Really the ideal seems to be that, for safety, some people shouldn’t know you’ve set a custom gender.

So the real solution here is to allow a user to set multiple custom genders, each with a separate ACL list. So you can have a public / family view gender, and then a ‘for friends I’m out to’ gender, at a minimum.

In the meantime, signal boost, because this is going to be non-obvious to a whole lot of people and doesn’t seem to be documented anywhere.

New Orleans is a food desert.

It’s weird, I know, because we have a huge reputation for our food—but our soil can’t grow it, not after the storm. Everything comes through the port, down the river, on the highway. Other people bring food to New Orleans to sell. They build grocery stores in Metairie, downtown, Uptown, on Magazine.

But they don’t build in the Lower 9th Ward.

There’s no grocery store there. There hasn’t been one since Katrina in 2005. It’s an extreme low-income neighborhood that depends on a problematic inconvenient public transit systems to cross the city to get any fresh food.

Our School at Blair Grocery wants to change that.

They’re reaching out to local universities and institutions and offering fresh fruit and vegetables to the community—but they’re also offering hope.

OSBG serves as a school, a service institution, and a place of employment for teenagers and young adults from the Lower 9th who want to give back and get more for their community.

But that’s all going to go away without help.

The New Orleans City Council recently passed through new zoning ordinances, and this landmark of the Lower 9th (built by a married couple in 1955 by hand with cypress wood) has to be rebuilt to code. The renovations cost $100,000.

They can’t afford this. They’re a nonprofit barely scraping by. They put together an IndieGoGo campaign, but it’s stagnating at just under $3,000—$97,000 short of their goal.

If they don’t open their building before the summer, the community could lose this resource for good. No garden, no produce, no program, no building.

Here is their IndieGogo.

Please help them in any way you can. Donate a dollar, signal boost, share this post, their link, anything anywhere you can do it. This is important, and soon it could be gone.

KICKSTART YOUR DAY WITH: “Because Of Them, We Can…” by Eunique Jones Gibson

This amazing photo campaign for kids where African-American children pose as the great African Americans of our past and present that helped PoC to become who they are now, started out as a project for Black History Month. The photographer behind the project, Eunique J. Gibson, then realized that doing this for only 28 days out of the month of February couldn’t and wouldn’t do.

Extending it to a full year where everyday, she would post a new photograph up on social networks, Gibson started the Kickstarter to turn her photo series into a book. She hopes to raise $80,000 by mid June, and has so far raised a little over $9,000.

Hey guys,
So this is Ahmed Tarik. He’s a friend of some of my college crew that I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with a few times and

On the night of November 2nd, 2013, Goucher graduate Ahmed Tarik was randomly assaulted in Towson and had his jaw broken. Subsequently, he was forced to have emergency surgery in the days following. Without health insurance, Ahmed is facing exorbitant medical bills and recovery expenses in the months to come. Raised funds will go towards paying medical bills and expenses from both the medical procedure and supporting Ahmed in recovery. Ahmed has been a dear member of the Goucher community since his arrival in 2009. He grew up in Baghdad, Iraq, and was forced to leave in 2006 and seek refuge in Syria where he completed his high school education. Youmacon Youmacon Youmacon!

You’ll find me behind my dealer’s room table for 90% of the con. According to Youma’s info, there will be TWO entrances to the dealer’s hall in the COBO. One next to registration, and the ‘main’ entrance. I’ve had to guess a bit but I think above is where the doors will be.

So! you’ll either find me right at the front, if you’re coming in from reg, or at the back, if you come in by the main doors. Either way I’m by the convention tables like Otakon and suchlike. My signage will say MAD HATTERY and I’m splitting the table space with RICE HAT SAMURAI. (Iki designs backed out sadly). Marc sells awesome handmade geeky jewlery (Sailor moon fans take a look at his pretties!)

Honestly, you shouldn’t be able to miss me- I’ll have the brightly coloured hats! Keep in mind there is another hat dealer - Blonde Swan. They do leather hats and that is not me!  XD

I demand you come visit me during the con! Bring me hugs and snacks and try on my hats so I can take pics of everyone being cute. Also, if you’re only coming for a day and need a badge to get in and out, let me know. I have a spare.

It’s going to be an awesome con! I hope

Important reminder!

chichirinoda:

Just a reminder that my survey for fiction writers who want to write original fiction is going to be closed tomorrow.

If you’re at all interested in taking a course to help you improve your chances of getting published (or of self-publishing something good) please do me a favour and take the survey. It’s only 10 questions, and will help me to make sure that the course answers the questions that people actually have instead of what I just think they need to know.

Reblogs would be super helpful to boost the signal!

YO my friend Cnd (aka published author Jessica Steiner) needs responses to her survey! She’s trying to develop a writing course to help FANFICTION AUTHORS convert their passion for writing into ORIGINAL FICTION THEY CAN PUBLISH!! She’s super cool and this is a super-cool project!!!

If you’re at all interested in something like this please fill out the survey! Even if you don’t think you’re interested in the course right now, maybe fill out the survey anyway? The more responses she gets, the more helpful her course will be for actual fanfic authors trying to become actual published authors!

And if nothing else, please reblog this so other people who might be interested can see and respond!!

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING, FRIENDS

If you love Scottish fold cats, I’m going to tell you something you don’t want to hear. Please, please read on anyway. If you are considering adopting a Scottish fold, PLEASE continue reading. This information needs to be more widely known.

In 2008, the Journal of Small Animal practice released a short report on disorders associated with breeds of cats. In this report, the authors mentioned the Scottish fold:

People who own them may be “charmed” by their round faces and open expression (and they may not realise that the reason the cats do not move around too much is because they are variably crippled with arthritis).1

The gene that causes the cute fold in the Scottish fold’s ear also leads to the development of a degenerative disorder called osteochondrodysplasia. ALL Scottish folds have this disorder, whether they show symptoms or not- the fold in their ears is caused by a cartilage deformity that also affects their joints.

Osteochondrodysplasia leads to crippling osteoarthritis, which affects Scottish folds at much younger ages than other breeds of cats. In cats heterozygous for the gene, the disease’s progression can be seen in cats as young as six months. In homozygous cats, it can be seen as early as seven weeks old.

Affected cats may be grossly deformed, with short wide limbs and a short, inflexible tail. They show lameness, swollen wrist (carpal) and ankle (tarsal) joints, have an abnormal gait, and are reluctant to move and jump. Severely affected individuals become crippled and unable to walk.

Many affected cats are euthanased earlier in life due to the profound effects of this disease.2

The breed is often described as “placid” and “calm.” This is due to the fact that they are constantly in pain due to this disorder. Even in mild, ‘asymptomatic’ cases which can occur in heterozygous cats, they may still be experiencing pain due to cats’ tendency to hide their suffering.

Many breeders of Scottish folds claim that not all heterozygous cats have the disorder, because the studies that examined the cats (which were all, heterozygous or not, shown to have it) had small sample sizes.

In 2003, Lorraine Shelton, a specialist in genetic diseases, offered to pay for 300 x-rays of healthy adult Scottish folds to prove that the disorder was not present in some heterozygous cats.

…She has asked a list of 300 Scottish Fold breeders from around the world to go to their vet to get X-rays done. She had offered to pay for these X-rays but not a single breeder had taken up that offer. You could not know whether this problem existed unless an X-ray was taken. If somebody would send her an X-ray of a healthy hind leg of a folded eared cat, she would be grateful as she wanted to see the very first one.3

To date, no one has taken her up on the offer. The breeders’ unwillingness to have their cats examined speaks volumes. The authors of all studies on these cats agree: it ethically wrong to continue breeding these cats.

It disturbs me that any breeder would knowingly continue to create animals that will be in pain throughout their lives. As a cat lover myself, I am begging you, please do not buy Scottish folds. Do not support these unethical breeding practices, or the concept that it is acceptable to intentionally breed unhealthy animals for the sake of how they look.
